Magic in Regards to Cardistry

"Anger and Agony are better than misery"

As you're well aware, I have frequently stated that unless amongst fellow magicians, cardists, or friends, I will not perform flourishes or cardistry while performing magic. It all relates to the magic theory I had only briefly started to describe to you. If one is to produce the greatest possible effect from their magic they must do everything possible to amplify the basic effect produced by a piece of magic. When we begin to combine flourishes and magic together it takes away from the effect, in most peoples performances. Certainly some can, "get away with it." However, they are not producing the greatest possible effect for their magic.

The main difference between magic and cardistry is in magic one can spend years mastering* a technique that is not supposed to be seen, while in Cardistry we can master a move in months and be able to show it to the world. Since we've worked so hard in magic we subconciously want our audience to notice how highly skilled we are and this often results in even performing a flourish that only took months to master as an example of that skill. We may not be showing them the complexities of our method of palming, but we at least get to show them that we have some form of skill.

It is because of the fact that we want to show them that we have skill that flourishes are a not amplifying the magic effect. If magic is meant to be an unexplainable occurance, which breaks the boundries of our reality, then showing them that we hav skill is not aiding us in that goal. If we show we have skills in one area, then the audience may believe it is our skills that are accomplishing the goal. We are now producing a partial explanation to how an effect worked and the effect our magic produces is now decreasing. In some cases a small flourish is fine, but some people have taken it to extremes and are not amplifying their magic effect at all. In some cases there even taking away from the effect.

The reason I have started to state this is because upon the completion of metaphyiscs I will not be focusing on flourishes/cardistry quite as much as I have been. I'm going to return to placing the largest focus on my magic. Don't worry, my friend, I am not abandoning you. I'll still be perofmring cardistry, but I'll also be devoting a lot of time to my magic. If you'd like to start developing the patience to learn magic and follow along with me I'd be more than glad to help. I look forward to hearing from you once you have access to a computer.

*it is impossible to truly master any technique in magic or cardistry. One can always improve.

Hank,

No, this is just a note I was stating on here. You know I figured I'd actually use this thing to keep each other informed on moves, practice, where we are in the art, etc. Good to hear from you, mate.

Word.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I also practice very weird sleight-of-hand moves to achieve magic effects, but I rarely use them when performing. I consider myself a "move-monkey", and I "have" to practice varius cardsleights. I feel that maybe, one of those sleights can come in handy to achieve another magic effect.
However, when performing for laypeople, I always use the most simple method to achieve the strongest effect.

Very good article there B.
